Eid al-fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, will fall on Sunday 19 August, according to calculations of a UAE astronomer, reported official news agency WAM.

Calculations show that the crescent moon marking the beginning of the tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar Shawwal will rise on Friday 17 August, at 7.54pm local time, claimed astronomy researcher and General Supervisor of the Sharjah Planetarium Ibrahim Jarwan.

The Eid Al Fitr holiday for the public sector will begin on Friday 17 August, based on Saturday being the first day of Shawwal, WAM earlier said.

The public sector will resume work on Tuesday, the fourth day of Shawwal, according to a circular issued by the Humaid Mohammad Al Qatami, Minister of Education and chairman of the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources.

Private sector employees will be given Saturday 18 August and Sunday 19 August off, providing Saturday is the first day of Shawwal. If Eid falls on Sunday the holiday moves forward a day, Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash said.
