Focus, alertness key to driving
With the holy month of Ramadan fast approaching, there could be some possible changes in an individual’s physiology as a result of fasting and altered sleeping habits that could affect driving, an official of Emirates Driving Institute (EDI) has warned.
“Few hours of sleep, evenings full of social obligations and errant meal times affect the driver’s ability to remain alert and focused while driving,” EDI ITC assistant manager P.M. Abdul Razak said.
Fasting can cause temporary low blood sugar and dehydration, which could lead to impatience, headache, lightheadedness and loss of concentration. On the other hand, a change in sleeping habits can cause lack of concentration, yawning and sore eyes, which can lead to missing road signs or exits, changing driving speed and not respecting lanes. EDI recommended that planning one’s daily schedules, especially eating and sleeping, is essential to driving more safely. Patience and courtesy to fellow drivers is also needed to prevent any potential mishaps. If you are too tired to drive your own vehicle, it would be better to take public transport or join a car pool.
“During Ramadan, you must be aware of your own fatigue as well as your physical and mental condition to ensure your safety and the safety of others,” Abdul Razak added.
