The US State Department has added Bahraini citizen Ahmed Abdulrahman Sihab Ahmed Sihab to its terrorist blacklist.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the department said Sihab had "been publicly charged with planning terrorist attacks as a member of al-Qa’ida", as well as training the Islamic terror group in "tactics, techniques, and procedures".

Sihab, also known as Abdulrahman al-Sharqi, has been wanted for extradition by his home country's government since January 2007 for allegedly participating in terrorist activities. An Interpol Red Notice has also been issued for Sihab's arrest.

The State Department notice "blocks all of Sihab’s property interests subject to US jurisdiction and prohibits US persons from engaging in transactions with Sihab".

Bahrain, strategically located in the Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has been rocked by internal unrest for more than a year now.

Since Shia-led demonstrations broke out in the Sunni-ruled kingdom in February 2011, 79 civilians have been killed and thousands injured, according to the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.

Protesters are demanding political reform in the GCC state.
