Chaos at Ruwais labour camp with more workers in hospital: sources

At least two people have died and several others admitted to hospital following suspected food poisoning in a labour camp in Ruwais in Abu Dhabi, according to sources from within the camp

No government or official confirmation of the deaths has yet been reported.

Enraged workers went on a rampage and attacked a nearby supermarket and also destroyed some vehicles located within the camp.

A spokesperson for the catering company that services the camp where the deaths took place told Emirates 24|7 that only two workers died, and insisted that both the deaths were due to heart-attacks.

The spokesman confirmed that the supermarket had been ransacked.

More than 8,000 workers are living in the camp in Ruwais.

Sources added that more than 20 workers have been admitted to hospital.

“The first person died on Thursday night and we all thought it might be because of heart-attack.

“More people started falling ill on Friday and five more people died yesterday evening,” said the source from within the camp.

Workers attacked a supermarket and destroyed goods worth more than Dh200,000.

“The furniture within the store has been broken, the interiors are destroyed and they have stolen goods from the supermarket located next door,” said the source.

Another official from the parent company of the supermarkt in Abu Dhabi confirmed the incident.

“We are aware of the incident. But the exact details are yet to be known. We are waiting for a detailed report,” he said.

Ruwais is home to several such construction camps that houses several thousand workers, mainly employed in work related to the oil and gas industry
