Work hours during Ramadan
Normal work hours at all private sector establishments during the holy month of Ramadan will be reduced by two hours per day.
The reduction in work hours will not be confined to Muslim employees only, the Ministry of Labour announced on Wednesday.

“Work hours in the holy month of Ramadan will be six hours a day, 36 hours a week, instead of 48 hours per week in other months,” sources at the ministry said. “The employee can be asked to work more hours provided that the extra hours are considered as overtime,” the sources explained.Workers will get 25 per cent extra pay of the basic wage per hour if the overtime is at the daytime and 50 per cent if the overtime work is at night.
“All establishments in all sectors are bound to implement this rule on the basis of the fact that it is one of the acquired rights of the employees during the holy month,” the sources noted.
Any company may regularise the work hours in a way that suits it and serves its interests, provided that it should pay workers for the overtime, which should not exceed two hours a day.
The ministry called on private companies to install signboards regarding the reduced work hours in places visible to all workers.
The employees should report to the ministry if any company ask them to follow the regular work hours during Ramadan, the ministry said.
The ministry will conduct inspection visits to the companies during Ramadan and take action against any establishment which found violating the law.
