Expats encouraged to attend sessions about Holy Month, writes Kimberly Lobo...

As Ramadan nears, Muslims around the world are preparing to fast to mark the Holy Month. Keeping in mind the essential rules and laws implemented so the culture and traditions in the Emirates are respected during this important time, the Eton Institute has organised workshops to educate non-Muslims.

The institute has been running the workshops for more than five years in Dubai and this year has extended them to Abu Dhabi. The sessions teach people about the customs, festivities, traditions and culture of the UAE, providing participants with everything they need to know about the Holy Month.

“The response to the workshops has always been tremendous, that is why we have extended our reach to Abu Dhabi to educate residents with the knowledge of cultural awareness and customs that are essential during Ramadan”, said Moaz Khan, marketing manager at Eton Institute.

“The workshop is more inclined towards expats who haven’t experienced Ramadan in the country before. It will also cover basics about Arabic language, greetings, expressions and important etiquettes related to the culture of the UAE.”

In previous years, an official from Dubai Police has attended one of the workshops and answered questions related to the rules and laws that come into force during Ramadan in the UAE.

British expat Mark Aubery, who attended the course, told 7DAYS: “The workshop was very informative. Coming from the UK, I had been told different things, and when I attended the workshop, it just blew my mind away. A UAE national addressed us, teaching us about tolerance, how to be considerate. On the whole it taught me what Ramadan is actually all about.”

He added: “As one of the first things I did in Dubai,

this was absolutely the best. Having the workshop was a good introduction to the UAE.”

The free Ramadan Etiquette workshop will be held in Abu Dhabi on July 10 from 4pm to 6pm at Eton Institute, near Khalifa Park, and will be held in Dubai on July 11 from 4pm to 6pm at Eton Institute in Dubai Knowledge Village.

Registration is now open and places are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

To register for the free workshop, visit www.eton.ac or call 800 ETON (8003866).
