Dubai, UAE. 25 September 2011. Heriot-Watt University has been named number one in its home country of Scotland by the Sunday Times Newspaper’s University Guide. With a mirror image Dubai Campus based in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) the university’s international reach was a significant factor in the awarding of the number one spot.

Having established its Dubai Campus in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) in 2005, the accomplishment of its head campus has provided an excellent boost for regional colleagues at the start of the academic year. Professor Ammar Kaka, vice principal and dean of the Dubai Campus, said: “This is as significant an achievement for us as it is for the UK campus. We pride ourselves on providing the same teaching methods, using the same materials and the same quality of education as the UK, and have an increasing number of international students choosing the Dubai Campus to undertake their education, both under and post graduate.”

Heriot-Watt is renowned for its industry-focused programmes and for producing graduates that are “highly respected throughout the world.” The Dubai Campus will be further increasing its position within the region’s academic circles with the opening of its new, bespoke, stand-alone campus in DIAC in January 2012. Specially designed to cater for Heriot-Watt’s portfolio of programmes, the new campus will incorporate similar state-of-the-art facilities that have been heralded by the Sunday Times review of its Scottish counterpart.

Scottish Development International (SDI), an association dedicated to helping the growth of Scottish businesses overseas, commented on the significance of the award for the Dubai Campus. Colin Crabbe, Regional Manager Middle East of Scottish Development International commented:

“We are delighted to offer our sincere congratulations to Heriot-Watt University on achieving this fantastic award. This success recognises the academic excellence being achieved at Heriot-Watt across its campuses in Scotland as well as at the Dubai Academic City campus, where Heriot-Watt was a trailblazer as the first British University to open a campus.

“Scotland has an historic reputation for academic achievement through our world-leading Universities, and Heriot-Watt’s vision in locating a campus in Dubai epitomises the model of transnational education and collaboration which SDI supports .”
